Earn your online electrical engineering degree from an accredited institution

Arizona State University offers the first fully online electrical engineering degree accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. This means the online degree meets the commission’s educational standards and prepares students to excel in engineering fields.

The online electrical engineering degree starts with fundamental courses focused on advanced math, science and the engineering design process. Later in the program, you’ll have the opportunity to take specialty courses covering electromagnetic fields, microprocessors, solid-state electronics, hardware design, circuits, photovoltaic cells, energy systems and more. Lab courses include industry-standard design and simulation tools to help you apply your knowledge and gain practical experience. As a student in this program, you’ll also have the option to pursue a concentration in electric power and energy systems.

Additionally, this bachelor’s degree can be completed as part of an Accelerated Master’s program. When accepted, you can earn a master’s degree in as little as one year after completing your undergraduate degree. This opportunity saves you time and money, while giving you advanced knowledge in your field. Applicable master’s degrees include:

  • Master of Science in engineering in electrical engineering.

What do electrical engineers do?

Electrical engineers design, develop and test electrical equipment and systems. This means their work ranges from managing the largest power grids to designing the smallest electrical components in your cell phone. A few examples include creating algorithms to better process digital signals, working on antennas, designing circuits systems, developing transistors and more. As the world becomes increasingly digital and electronic, electrical engineers are needed in a variety of fields including:

Professional licensure and certification

ASU offers programs that lead to professional licensure with the state of Arizona and may allow graduates to be eligible for licensure in other states. Students should check the professional licensure list for the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering to determine if this program meets requirements in their state. Please note that not all programs within the Fulton Schools lead to professional licensure.

Will my electrical engineering degree say 'online'?

No, Arizona State University’s diplomas don’t specify whether you earn your degree online or in person. All diplomas and transcripts simply say “Arizona State University.” That’s because ASU Online students learn from the same faculty and receive the same course content as in-person students receive.

How long does it take to get an online electrical engineering degree and what courses will I take?

If you’re a full-time student, you can earn your online electrical engineering degree in four years, though the actual time you spend may vary based on your circ*mstances. In general, during the first two years of study, you’ll develop a foundation in the essential principles of engineering and electricity. Over the next two years, you may specialize in specific electrical engineering subfields.

The online electrical engineering degree program concludes with a two-semester design lab, during which you work with your peers to create an original project.
